Psalm 119:11

Psalm 119:5 "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."

Job 23:12 "...I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread."

Col. 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom and as you sign psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."

Scripture Memorization - Yikes! I'm terrible at this. When I can memorize the words, I can't remember where it came form. When I can memorize the passage, I can't remember the words.

I think my memory block came from my years spent memorizing piano solos. Hours and hours I would spend playing songs over and over to be prepared for contests and recitals. I would get to the point where I could read a novel and play my song at the same time. I suppose that I figured if I could do it with my mind distracted, I would also be able to play the song in front of judges. And I always did. But, I always hated it.

I never minded playing in front of people, I was terrified of the memorization. And as soon as I could quit doing that - I did. Then, came my senior vocal recital in college, and I had to memorize the songs for that. In Italian, in English, in Spanish, in French. I was in hell for that year.

But, God has given me songs again to memorize scripture. I have sung these praise songs so often, over and over again. They are a part of my very being. And they are scripture that I have finally hidden in my heart, through song.

The first song I remember identifying as memorized scripture was Luke 4:17-18. "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind. To set at liberty, those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."

Now, while you may not be singing the tune along with that - I am...everytime I read those words.

It's wonderful to watch kids learning scripture in song. We taught the kids at Vacation Bible School: Joshua 1:9 "Be strong and courageous!"

Matthew 6:33 "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. And all these things will be added unto you. Allelu, Alleluia!"

I am in love with the Scriptures. They are God's words written down for me to ponder, to learn from and to heed. And God has worked around my distaste for memorization by giving me beautiful praise songs to help me learn His Word.
